Vinous Table: Rusty Staub Charity Dinner, New York (Dec 2015)

Even better than the 1990, the 1982 Unico is simply one of the very best wines I have tasted in some time. Powerful, fleshy and full of energy, the 1982 Unico is another wine that is almost overwhelmingly beautiful. A striking mélange of savory herbs, smoke and tobacco add complexity, but the 1982 is about…

Best New Releases from Spain (Sep 1998)

Deep red. Superripe aromas of currant, espresso and iron. Dense, ripe, fruity and youthful. Supple and generous, with good supporting acidity. Really fat with fruit but seems less powerfully structured than the ’86. The firm finish builds and builds.

The Best New Wines From Spain (Sep 2005)

Bright ruby-red. Musky aromas of currant, roasted herbs, Cuban tobacco, black olive and black pepper. Lush and supple but firmly built, with wonderfully velvety, multilayered flavors of outstanding depth. The Best New Wines From Spain (Sep 2004)

Bright medium ruby. Knockout nose combines cherry, black raspberry, baconfat, woodsmoke, leather, underbrush and pipe tobacco. Lush, pliant and sweet, with layered flavors of strawberry, coffee, leather, minerals and charred oak. Distinctly wild but with terrific fruit. Finishes with dusty tannins and excellent length. Shows the Burgundian side of tempranillo in Ribera del Duero.

2000 and 1999 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2002)

Medium-deep red-ruby. Roasted, tarry red fruits, animal fur and chocolate on the nose; as vibrant and vinous as a barrel sample. Extremely lush and concentrated, and already highly aromatic in the mouth, with notes of red and black fruits, roasted nuts, spices, chocolate and tobacco. Beautifully integrated acidity. Finishes very long, with substantial, very fine…
