Ornellaia: A Major Retrospective 1985-2006 (Dec 2009)

It is fascinating to taste the 2006 Le Serre Nuove (magnum), the second wine of Ornellaia, in this setting, as it shows quite well, especially next to some of the Ornellaias from smaller vintages. Le Serre Nuove is naturally made to be more accessible than Ornellaia and contains a higher percentage of Merlot, which gives…

Vinous Table: Ai Fiori, New York (Dec 2013)

Elisabetta Geppetti’s 2004 Saffredi shows the sexiness and silkiness of this great Tuscan vintage. Here it is the expressive bouquet and silky tannins that stand out most. The 2004 can be enjoyed today and over the next decade or so. Saffredi is one of my favorite Maremma wines and 2004 is one of the top…

The Best New Wines from Spain (Sep 2006)

Dark violet. Expansive yet suave bouquet of smoky blackcurrant, blueberry and boysenberry, accented by vanilla, clove, iron, sandalwood, cigar box and minerals. Remarkably graceful and sweet, with outstanding depth and richness. Offers striking concentration and finesse and finishes utterly seamless, deep and extremely long.

Focus on California’s North Coast (May 2006)

Good full ruby-red. Currant, chocolate, soy sauce and a whiff of maple syrup on the nose. Fat, lush and sweet if a bit chunky. Solidly constructed cabernet that finishes with big, dusty tannins and a faint greenness.

Piedmont Report: Checking in on the 2001 Baroli (Apr 2012)

The 2001 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell’Annunziata is huge and seamless from start to finish. The wine totally envelops the palate with masses of dark red fruit, roses, spices, and mint, all supported by nearly imperceptible tannins. The volume and shape of the 2001 is simply breathtaking. This is Scavino’s most vibrant 2001. It is also…

2003 Barolo: Ten Years Later (Jun 2014)

Massolino’s 2003 Barolo is a beautiful wine. Medium in body and gracious to the core, the 2003 is laced with sweet tobacco, crushed herbs, licorice and orange peel. The 2003 has reached its tenth birthday in style, but it is also approaching maturity, so any remaining bottles are best enjoyed sooner rather than later.
