2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

(bottled late, in November of 2007) Saturated red-ruby. Explosive aromas of plum, raspberry, bitter chocolate, coffee, almond paste and smoke; this smells voluptuous. Then extraordinarily opulent on the palate, with an almost marzipan-like ripeness. Coats every square millimeter of the mouth with a texture of liquid silk. The baby fat here is incredible, but there’s…

Margaux Focus 3: Château Margaux (Sep 2023)

The 2005 Château Margaux is a stupendous wine. It has a multi-faceted bouquet with a mélange of black and red fruit, pressed flowers, cedar and graphite. A blue fruit hint emerges with time. It is still backward at the moment. The palate is intense for this First Growth with vivid flavors: blackberry, cedar, damson and…

The Comedown: Bordeaux 2011 Ten-Years-On (Apr 2022)

The 2011 Château d’Armailhac has a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, tobacco and graphite, a little more energy here compared to the 2011 Pontet Canet. The palate has a slight greenness on the entry, fine acidity, a bit angular in style with some attenuation on the tobacco and graphite finish. Tasted…

2011 Bordeaux from the Bottle (Jul 2014)

Bright medium ruby. Subtle, vinous aromas of blackcurrant, sour red cherry, violet and minerals. Sweet and silky on entry, then tight in the middle, showing terrific purity and verve to the flavors of red fruits, sweet spices and flowers. Finishes sappy and lightly saline, with fine tannins and outstanding length. This terrific, perfumed wine is…

2011 Bordeaux from the Bottle (Jul 2014)

Saturated medium red. Bright aromas and flavors of blackcurrant, plum, herbs and minerals offer good intensity and lift. The moderately long finish is distinctly aromatic and spicy, showing lovely texture and smooth tannins.

The Comedown: Bordeaux 2011 Ten-Years-On (Apr 2022)

The 2011 Rauzan-Ségla has a ripe, flesh, red plum, hoisin and sandalwood-scented bouquet, quite showy and forward, willing to give sensory pleasure now, not tomorrow. The palate is beautifully balanced, fresh and saline with fine grain tannins. Linear, but there is tension here that is missing in some of the other 2011 Margaux wines. Persistent…
