1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Deep ruby-red color. More expressive aromas of crystallized dark berries, dark chocolate and animal fur. Lush and sweet; thick but delineated. Wonderfully concentrated. This, too, seems rather withdrawn today, but the strength of material is clear to see. Finishes with firm tannins and explosive fruit that goes on and on.

1999, 1998 and 1997 Bordeaux (May 2000)

Very good red-ruby. Roasted currant, raspberry and sandalwood on the nose. Less dense and fruity than the ’99 and ’98 but supple and easygoing. The tannins are a bit more noticeable on the finish as there’s a bit less ripeness of flavor and buffering material.

Champagne: The 2017 Summer Preview (Jul 2017)

This is perhaps the best bottle of Krug’s 2002 Vintage I have tasted. Expansive and creamy on the palate, with lovely finesse and brightness, the 2002 is quite expressive today. I don’t see the depth or pedigree that might place this wine among the best examples of the year. Instead, the 2002 Vintage continues to…

Champagne: 2021 New Releases (Nov 2021)

The 2008 Dom Pérignon Rosé is magnificent. Rich and deep in the glass, the 2008 offers up an exotic mélange of aromas and flavors. Sweet red cherry, mint, orange peel and rose petal all grace this beguiling beauty. Bright acids and a little less still red Pinot (21%) than in most recent editions yields a…

Vinous Table: California Classics at Bar Boulud, New York (Jan 2015)

The 2008 Syrah The Duel, from Manfred and Elaine Krankl’s Eleven Confessions Vineyard, is also impossibly young, with little in the way of flavor development. I typically enjoy the Sine Qua Non reds either upon release or around age ten, so I probably should have followed my own advice. The 2008 is beautiful, but it…

Annual Coverage of California’s Central Coast (Nov 2012)

(includes 6% grenache and 6% viognier; 15.7% alcohol): Glass-staining purple. Flamboyant aromas and flavors of candied black and blue fruits, violet pastille and spicecake. Stains the palate with deep fruit and spice qualities but shows surprising vivacity and clarity, picking up a lavender pastille nuance with air. Finishes sweet and very long, with resonating blue…
