1996 Champagne – For The Ages (Oct 2014)

One of the more accessible wines of the year today, the 1996 Dom Pérignon impresses for its exceptional balance and class. Lemon peel, white flowers and mint are laced together in the glass. The 1996 is in a terrific place today where it can be enjoyed or cellared for a number of years.

Focus on Champagne (Nov 1999)

Very fine aromas of quinine, lemon, lime, minerals and gingery; lightly musky suggestion of yeast autolysis. Very intensely flavored and solidly structured but already quite accessible and open to inspection. Slightly aggressive finish shows excellent persistence. Doesn’t offer the complexity or grip of the best D.P. vintages, but this is ripe and delicious wine.

La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy – Côte de Nuits (Dec 2020)

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has a slightly more cohesive bouquet compared to the Clos de Château, featuring wild strawberry and morello cherry, quite gentle and lilting. The palate is medium-bodied with cranberry and light spicy notes on the entry. Darker berry fruit enters toward the finish, and a saline tang lingers on the aftertaste.

La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy – Côte de Nuits (Dec 2020)

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru was a little reduced on the nose when I tasted it from barrel. The palate is quite dense with good grip and darker fruit than the Ruchottes, leading to a lightly peppered finish. I will reserve judgment for later.

La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy – Côte de Nuits (Dec 2020)

The 2019 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru clearly has more intensity than the Chambertin. True, it is showing a little more wood at the moment, but I also find more fruit – raspberry and wild strawberry – interlaced with shavings of black truffle and forest fern.
