Enigma Variations: Lafleur 1955-2015 (Nov 2018)

The 2007 Lafleur has a straightforward bouquet with mulberry and strawberry pastilles, touches of scorched earth and game coming through courtesy of the Cabernet Franc. I admire the definition and poise on display here. The palate is medium-bodied with quite bold tannin and satisfying ripeness considering the growing season, a mixture of red and black…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

(57% merlot and 43% cabernet franc) Good deep ruby-red. Complex nose melds black plum, musky chocolate, licorice, menthol and fresh herbs. Sweet, dense, ripe and silky, with lovely life and palate coverage. Pure and harmonious from the outset, with a firm architecture for the year. Finishes a bit strict but not hard, with a smoky…

Vertical Tasting of Chateau Lynch-Bages (Jan 2012)

(a blend of 80% cabernet sauvignon, 12% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 3.67 pH; 5.54 g/l total acidity; 63 IPT; 13.4% alcohol): Fully saturated deep ruby. Enticing, slightly high-toned aromas of red cherry, menthol and spicecake pick up considerable depth with aeration. Turns a little austere in the mouth, showing a cooler,…

A Century of Bordeaux: The Twos (Sep 2022)

The 2002 Lynch Bages has a savoury, rather leathery bouquet, perhaps with just a touch of brettanomyces? The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannins, moderate depth, chewy with a minty finish. It’s just a bit gawky compared to recent vintages. Burly at the moment, bucolic. Tasted at the château.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

Bright ruby-red. Pungent, high-toned aromas of raw berries, graphite and licorice, with a suggestion of eucalyptus. Then cool and bright in the mouth, but with a surprisingly plush texture considering the wine’s herbal elements. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins that call for four or five years of further aging. Solidly built, classic Lynch-Bages.

2007 and 2006 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2009)

Bright purple. Sexy red and dark berries on the nose, with exotic floral and Asian spice qualities adding complexity. Sweet raspberry and candied plum flavors are supported by a gentle undercurrent of minerals. The floral and plum notes repeat on the chewy finish, which is impressively pure and persistent.
