2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

The 2014 Langoa-Barton is pliant, open-knit and succulent. Sweet red berry, tobacco, licorice and dried flowers all develop nicely, but it is the wine’s midpalate juiciness and suppleness that stand out. The oak and tannins could use a bit more time to settle down. Otherwise, this is very nicely done. Tasted two times.

Bordeaux 2014: The Southwold Tasting (Mar 2018)

The 2014 Langoa Barton has an earthy, slightly dour bouquet compared to its peers, missing the same degree of vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle tannin, a little soft around the edges compared to the Gloria, easygoing by comparison with a light mintiness coming through towards the finish. This is a lovely Langoa Barton…

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

Expressive floral notes, bright red stone fruit and silky tannins all give the 2014 Giscours considerably more finesse than when I last tasted it. Delicate, nuanced and medium in body, this classy Margaux shows quite a bit of polish and overall nuance. It will be interesting to see how the 2014 evolves and, specifically, if…

Bordeaux 2014: The Southwold Tasting (Mar 2018)

The 2014 Giscours has a slightly muddled bouquet with tertiary/woodland scents infusing the broody black fruit, austere but attractive. With aeration it seems to find its groove and develop more clarity and detail. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, supple and focused. There is lovely balance and poise to this Giscours, with a tensile…

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

A gorgeous second wine, the 2014 La Dame de Montrose is soft, open-knit and very pretty. Bright floral notes add lift and a measure of elegance to the dark-fleshed fruit. Medium in body, with good depth and fine overall balance, the 2014 is just about as good as it gets for a second wine. I…

Bordeaux 2014: The Southwold Tasting (Mar 2018)

The 2014 La Dame de Montrose has a relatively straightforward bouquet with tobacco-tinged black fruit that need more focus and detail. The palate is medium-bodied with good density, a little chewy, a Saint Estèphe with sinew and backbone, the finish a little heavy-handed and perhaps trying too hard to impress? Tasted blind at the annual…
