Bordeaux 2010: All That Glitters… (May 2011)

(a blend of 50% cabernet sauvignon, 38% merlot and 12% petit verdot) Opaque ruby-purple. Fragrant floral notes complicate strawberry and mineral aromas. Juicy, fresh and fruity on entry, with lovely red berry and cherry flavors. Shows a distinctly cool, vibrant quality on the back end, finishing with firm, building, fine-grained tannins and lingering fresh red…

Squares & Circles: Bordeaux ‘10 At Ten (Apr 2020)

The 2010 d’Angludet has a ripe and fleshier bouquet than the 2010 Ferrière with layers of sweet red cherries and crushed strawberry mixed with cedar and mint, almost Pauillac-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, fresh and lithe, the acidity well judged and almost gentle towards the graphite-tinged finish. Certainly this constitutes…

The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

Good bright, dark red. Sexy aromas of bitter cherry, dark chocolate, mocha, potpourri spices and flowers. Silky and supple but a bit reduced, showing a restrained sweetness today to its dark berry, licorice and floral flavors. Rich and pliant wine, but without quite the tension or perfume for 90 points.

The Margaux Paragon: Rauzan-Ségla 1900-2015 (Apr 2019)

The 1990 Rauzan-Ségla is another vintage that I have not tasted for some time. It was picked from September 17 to October 7. Now at 28-years of age it shows some maturation on the tawny rim, the core a little lighter in colour than the 1998 for example. The bouquet has certainly matured in recent…

The 1990 Clarets…To Have and To Hold (Nov 1993)

Brilliant deep red. Very ripe, new-oaky aromas of raspberry and cherry, with floral, herbal and lilac nuances. Very dense, supple and concentrated; the underlying structure is not as obvious as in the ’86 or ’88 because the wine is so ripe and fleshy. Finishes with ripe but substantial tannins. 91(+?). One of three bottles tasted…

Vertical Tasting of Chateau Lynch-Bages (Jan 2012)

(5.1 g/l total acidity; 12.9% alcohol): Deep ruby-red. Enticing aromas of blackcurrant, coffee liqueur, minerals and ink. Sweet, rich and ripe on the palate, with dark berry, plum and cedar flavors. Finishes clean and quite persistent, with lovely saline and dark berry nuances. Not a blockbuster but very classic Bordeaux with a refined mouthfeel and…
