Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Cantemerle comes across pretty much as it did from barrel. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum and sweet spice gives this a good bit of exuberance. I don’t mind the very ripe style so much, but it is the lack of mid-palate and finish that is more problematic.

2016 Bordeaux…It’s All In The Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Canon is soft, open-knit and caressing, with lovely depth to match its mid-weight personality. Sweet tobacco, mint, dried flowers and blood orange add freshness to a core of sweet red cherry fruit. A wine of subtlety and class, the 2016 has quite a bit to say, but speaks in hushed tones. The 2016…

Southwold: 2016 Bordeaux Blind (Aug 2020)

The 2016 Canon offers red fruit on the nose, very detailed, along with scents of wilted rose petal, truffle and brown spices. I admire how understated this is initially, then stepping up through the gears with aeration. 2017 Bordeaux – Mirror, Mirror on The Wall… (Mar 2020)

Nicolas Audebert and his team have done it again. The 2017 Canon is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. Rich and vertical in construction, the 2017 possesses off-the-charts richness and intensity in all of its dimensions. In the glass, the 2017 is sumptuous and layered, with superb detail and tons…

Vintage Seeks Home: Bordeaux 2017 In Bottle (Jan 2020)

The 2017 Canon was bottled on 15 May, 2019. This needs time to settle in the glass, the oak rather vocal at this early stage and overshadowing the blackberry and briary aromas. It only takes a couple of minutes for this Saint-Émilion to settle and reveal more limestone-infused fruit that really shows its terroir. The…

2021 Bordeaux En Primeur: Back to Classicism (May 2022)

The 2021 Calon Ségur is a gorgeous wine that is going to need a number of years to fully come into its own. Aromatic, punchy and croquant, as the French say, the 2021 is a vibrant, mid-weight Calon that will delight readers who enjoy classically built claret. Don’t look for the size or opulence of…
