2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)

The 2005 Latour was mind-blowingly profound in two recent tastings for this report. Deep and sensual to the core, the 2005 is utterly captivating. All the elements are so seamlessly put together. Graphite, crème de cassis, licorice, dark spice and lavender infuse the 2005 with so much energy. More than anything else, though, the 2005…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

($1; 500-$2,000) Deep ruby-red. Reticent, brooding aromas of cassis, black plum, graphite and flowers. Then utterly explosive in the mouth, with wonderful sappy complexity of flavor and a thickness of texture that builds and builds toward the back; almost no sign of the new oak here. Offers a near-magical combination of power and refinement, but…

Roederer Cristal Full Circle: 1993-2015 (Dec 2023)

I have tasted the 2015 Cristal three times so far. Those tastings paint a portrait of a complex Champagne that is still finding its center. Tasted at the maison, the 2015 is rich, dense and explosive, with tremendous textual intensity and also a good bit of energy to back it up. Citrus confit, spice, ginger,…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Good deep red. Pungent aromas of currant, cherry skin, leather, graphite, olive and flowers. Suave, minerally and penetrating, with lovely energy and floral lift. Not at all a fleshy style but classic, vibrant and firmly built, finishing with excellent lift.

The 2015 Red Burgundies: You Are So Going To Want Them (Jan 2017)

Healthy dark red. Black raspberry aroma complicated by soil tones of truffle and underbrush. Then juicy and rather tight, showing good clarity and reserve to its medicinal dark cherry and dark chocolate flavors. Densely packed and smoothly tannic. Doesn’t quite come alive today but this wine nicely combines power and a sophisticated texture.

2007 Bordeaux : Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Overpriced (Jul 2010)

Good full, deep red. Aromas of cassis, licorice and pepper. Supple and sweet but serious, with a slightly medicinal cast to the flavors of cassis, tobacco leaf, sassafras and leather. Finishes with supple tannins, a subtly sappy quality and very good length.
