The 2008 Clarets (Jul 2011)

Good deep ruby-red. Complex aromas and flavors of currant, raspberry, smoke, musky dried herbs, sexy oak tones and minerals. Rich, broad and lush; big, rich and sweet but with an edge of acidity giving lift and grip to the middle palate. At once sexy and serious wine, finishing with broad, horizontal tannins and excellent length.

2008 Bordeaux: A Day In A Life (Feb 2018)

The 2008 Cos d’Estournel had one of the most backward, reticent bouquets that I encountered during my tasting. This is so sultry and broody, begrudgingly offering some lovely brambly red fruit mixed with pencil box. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, plenty of black fruit laced with allspice, black pepper and sage, leading to…

Bordeaux ’08: Far Better Than Expected (May 2009)

(85% cabernet sauvignon, 13% merlot and 2% cabernet franc; 13.8 % alcohol; 80% new oak) Saturated purple-ruby. Complex, sexy aromas of plum, dark chocolate and balsamic vinegar. The silky flavors of blackcurrant, tobacco and sweet oak show extraordinary baby fat and volume. Wonderfully rich and extremely powerful wine with a very long, perfumed back end….

2011 Red Burgundies (Mar 2014)

Good bright red. Exotic red berry liqueur, flowers, passion fruit and peach on the nose. Fat and sweet for this cru; softer and less refined than the 2012 version. Still, this shows better inner-mouth tension than the Combottes and finishes firmer, with chewy tannins.

Priceless: Roumier Bonnes-Mares 1945 – 2015 (Sep 2018)

The 2011 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has a similar bouquet to the one I encountered in 2014: open-knit, quiet tertiary on the nose, the fruit only gradually surfacing with aeration. The palate is built around quite firm and rigid tannin, rendering this a more masculine Les Cras with a grippy, almost Morey-like tea-leaf tinged…

Domaine Georges Roumier Part 2: Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru (Nov 2022)

The 2011 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru is a vintage that I have not tasted for three or four years. Quite light on the nose, it feels maybe more tertiary than I would have liked, airy, some stemminess evident with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet cherry core, redcurrant, orange rind and hints…
