A Century – Not Out: Talbot 1919-2010 (Oct 2019)

The 2006 Talbot offers this Saint-Julien’s trademark cedar and tobacco scents and as I remarked previously, there is a scent of walking around a stately home. The palate is medium-bodied with decent weight, rather austere in style and needing more flesh to come through on the finish. Respectable given the vintage but not the most…

The 2008 Clarets (Jul 2011)

Bright ruby. Sexy, ripe nose combines cassis, Cuban cigar tobacco, licorice and minerals. Sweet, tactile and intense, with concentrated, sharply delineated flavors of dark fruits and minerals. Densely packed, ripe and deep. Offers a lovely combination of silky texture, firm structure and the aromatic lift and nuance of the vintage’s best examples. Should age gracefully…

2008 Bordeaux: A Day In A Life (Feb 2018)

The 2008 Léoville Barton has a lovely, heart-warming bouquet of ripe blackberry and cedar, touches of graphite, precise and supremely well focused. Classic Barton. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and lively with impressive density; structured with a firm backbone on the graphite-tinged and tensile finish that suggests that it deserves another 3-4 years in bottle….

Bordeaux ’08: Far Better Than Expected (May 2009)

Very deep purple-ruby. Floral aromas of blueberry, blackcurrant and violet. The palate offers lovely balance, with pure black fruit flavors in perfect harmony with fine acids and smooth tannins. Finishes long and pure, with a late mineral surge. Not the last word in concentration but a gorgeous, well-made wine.

2012 and 2011 Northern Rhone Wines (Mar 2014)

Vivid purple. Heady aromas of fresh dark berries, violet, woodsmoke and black pepper, with a zesty mineral nuance adding urgency. Juicy, penetrating and lively in the mouth, offering intense black and blue fruit flavors and a touch of floral pastilles. Silky tannins give shape to the long, smooth, appealingly fresh finish. (Incidentally, the 2010 Thalabert…

2008 and 2007 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2010)

Vivid ruby. High-pitched aromas of raspberry, licorice, pepper and minerals, plus a whiff of smoked meat. Sappy, racy and focused, with sharply delineated flavors of cherry and blackberry. Comes across as reserved today owing to an impression of bright acidity. Youthfully tight wine, finishing with very good purity and energy and a whiplash of dark…
