Checking in on Piedmont’s 2000 Vintage (Jun 2011)

The 2000 Barolo Le Vigne is made from parcels across multiple vineyards, which is always an advantage in challenging vintages. The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2004)

(blend based on 62% cabernet sauvignon) Medium red-ruby. Aromas of roasted plum and nutty oak. Fat, sweet, broad and suave, with gentle flavors of redcurrant, plum and game. Aromatic and gentle in the mouth. Long, ripe finish features substantial but sweet tannins. Lovely claret.

Bright violet. Jawdroppingly pure bouquet of blackberry, boysenberry, blackcurrant, kirsch, exotic tobacco, graphite and licorice, with a crystalline mineral tone running all the way through. Like liquid velvet in the mouth, showing a stunning melange of dark berry flavors that seem weightless but pack an amazing wallop of flavor. This is only 13.4% alcohol but…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Full, saturated red-ruby. Knockout nose combines redcurrant, tropical chocolate, leather, woodsmoke and nutty oak with exotic chocolate mint and coffee liqueur; still manages to retain floral lift even in this beastly vintage. Then wonderfully fat, sweet and full, even if it comes across as almost heavy following the ineffable 2005 and 2004 examples. But relatively…
