Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)

The 2019 La Lagune offers exquisite transparency on the nose – one of the most terroir-expressive Pessac-Léognan wines this vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, taut and fresh, quite saline with a very integrated and poised finish that lingers in the mouth. Wonderful – could this be the best La Lagune in years?…

The 2019 Champagne Summer Preview (Jul 2019)

The 2005 Dom Pérignon Rosé is an attractive, persistent wine with plenty of character. Sweet dried cherry, mint and rose petals are some of the many nuances that develop with air. Savory notes that are on the edge of vegetal and a real feeling of tannin from the 27% still red Pinot in the blend…

Vertical Tasting of Chateau Mouton-Rothschild (Aug 2011)

(75% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot, 8% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; ph 3.61; IPT 53; 12.1% alcohol; 90% new oak): Deep, saturated ruby-red with a hint of garnet at the rim. Floral nose offers aromas of red cherry, orange rind, cedar and aromatic herbs. Big, dense and concentrated, with ripe red cherry and plum…

Cellar Journal: Bordeaux 1920-2015 (Dec 2019)

The 1983 Latour is a delightful surprise. It is a vintage that I had not seen for a few years, and I had just two vague recollections of an ordinary First Growth; this was far superior and unquestionably the best bottle I have encountered. Modest bricking on the rim. The harmonious bouquet is fragrant and…

2006, 2005 and 2004 Bordeaux (May 2007)

Medium ruby-red. Scented nose offers plum, mocha, licorice, graphite, flowers and tobacco. Suave, silky and fine-grained, with lovely inner-mouth aromatic character and energy. Perfumed flavors of redcurrant, minerals and cedar. Finishes very long and firm, with terrific grip for this mostly gentle vintage.

Cleaning Out the Cupboard: Bordeaux 1943-2020 (Jan 2023)

How annoying. The 1962 Lafite-Rothschild is a wine that I was looking forward to, yet it is clearly quite musty on the nose with a toffee-ish scent. The palate is actually fairly pleasurable with fine definition, and it improves in the glass gaining freshness. But I don’t think this is representative enough to score. Tasted…
