The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2004)

Deep red-ruby. Raspberry, smoke, tobacco and roasted nuts on the nose. Sweet, supple and fairly deep, with nicely integrated acids giving shape to the wine. This has very good breadth and palate presence. Lingering finish features sweet tannins.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2004)

Full red-ruby, less bright than La Mission. Brooding aromas of raspberry, nuts, menthol and game. Dense, rich, chewy and deep but a bit youthfully closed, showing less personality today than the 2001 La Mission. Larger but not longer. Finishes with building tannins and a minty nuance.

Vinous Table: Tristan, Horsham, UK (Jun 2022)

You cannot really go wrong with the 2001 Haut-Brion, which showed similarly to the one tasted just a few weeks earlier. The bouquet positively gushes with black cherries and violets, incense and here, a little more black olive. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins and sweet ripe black fruit laced with graphite, blood orange…

On the Tuscan Coast: New Releases (Oct 2015)

The 2012 Ornellaia has put on quite a bit of weight since I first tasted it from bottle a few months ago. Rich, powerful and concentrated, the 2012 offers plenty of depth and intensity, with expressive fruit and striking mid-palate intensity. Dark red cherry jam, wild flowers, licorice, smoke, tobacco and mint blossom in the…

Vinous Table: Tuscan Dinner @ 67 Pall Mall, London, UK (May 2023)

The 2012 Ornellaia was perhaps a little overawed by the mature Solaia and Sassicaia in the flight. Pretty backward and unresponsive on the nose, I find this a bit simplistic by comparison, with blackberry and bilberry aromas and a touch of VA. The palate is medium-bodied with dense tannins, muscular at the moment, moody and…

The Margaux Paragon: Rauzan-Ségla 1900-2015 (Apr 2019)

The 1989 Rauzan-Ségla is a vintage that to my surprise, I had not tasted since September 2007. Just like then it represents the high point of the decade and augured a much brighter future in terms of quality. At three decades old it has a beautiful bouquet, so elegant with brambly red fruit, cedar and…
