2018 Burgundy: Confounded Expectations (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru showed just a little reduction on the nose, but that blows away with modest swirling to reveal blackberries, raspberry coulis, touches of melted tar and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip. It displays a fine crescendo in the mouth, until it reaches the effervescent finish….

2018 Burgundy: Confounded Expectations (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d’Orveau has a tightly wound bouquet of blackberry and raspberry fruit. It seems a little closed at the moment, perhaps due to the cold and overcast conditions when I visited the domaine. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins that frame the vibrant red berry fruit, mixed with brown spices,…

Lower Your Sails (Or Breeches): Beychevelle 1929-2019 (Mar 2023)

The 2005 Beychevelle has an attractive nose with brambly red fruit, marmalade, cedar and light leather aromas. This is just a little rustic, yet full of vigor and presence. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins. Solid and muscular, it comes across a little uncouth compared to more recent, more refined vintages, though it has…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Good deep red-ruby. Subtle oak accents very ripe aromas of plum, currant, mocha, chocolate and tobacco leaf. Sweet, ripe and broad, with good density and freshness to the currant and spice flavors. Not a blockbuster but sweeter than the 2006 and longer on the aftertaste, finishing with fairly substantial but ripe tannins.

Opus One – Past, Present and Future: 1979-2012 (Jun 2013)

There is so much to like about the 2007 Opus One. A wine that captures the essence of the year, the 2007 is exotic, flashy and striking. Kirsch, rose petals, pomegranates and spices form a fabric of compelling beauty. The 2007 is rich, sumptuous and generous, just as it should be. Threads of striking perfume…

Vintage Retrospective: The 2007 Napa Valley Cabernets (May 2017)

(14.8% alcohol): Fresh red-ruby color. Medicinal kirsch and spices on the nose, plus a suggestion of rose. Wonderfully sweet and seamless but given shape and definition by lovely floral lift and firm acidity. There’s something old school about this beauty, which has lost some of its baby fat while retaining its primary fruit character. Finishes…
