Henschke’s Hill of Grace – The Garden of Eden (Apr 2023)

The 2005 Shiraz Hill of Grace is quite the powerhouse, displaying a concentrated and hearty core of dark tones: licorice, cocoa, clove, tar and roasted spices. A vigorous, ripe palate with serious fruit impact follows; ample, chewy tannins support it through a lengthy finish. The 2005 will age well, so there’s no need to hurry.

New Releases from Australia, Part 2 (Sep 2009)

(100% shiraz) Deep, bright ruby. Assertively perfumed bouquet offers a kaleidoscopic array of dark berry preserve, Asian spice, tobacco and incense aromas, with sexy vanilla and smoked meat notes adding complexity. Santa Cruz Mountains: Wines of Breathtaking Pedigree (Sep 2020)

The 2017 Monte Bello continues to develop beautifully. A heady, opulent wine, the 2017 also has tons of supporting structure to balance things out. Layers of dark red/purplish fruit give the 2017 remarkable primary intensity, with hints of licorice, mocha, dried flowers and menthol that build over time, hinting at the wine’s ultimate potential. Sensual…

Soaring aromatics, bright acids and mid-weight structure give the 2016 a super-classic feel. Clearly, the 2016 is very primary today, with plenty of bright red and purplish berry fruit. More than that, though,…

Vinous Event: 2010 Brunello di Montalcino (Dec 2015)

Il Poggione’s 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is the single best value in top-flight Brunello di Montalcino. If there was any doubt about that, this tasting makes it clear that Il Poggione belongs right up there along with the best of them. A towering, massively endowed wine, the Poggione is simply marvelous.

2014 Barbaresco: An October Surprise (Oct 2017)

Gaja’s 2014 Barbaresco is rich, super-dense, and inviting, with serious underpinnings of structure and the same classicism that made the 2013 so compelling. Dense and powerful in the glass, with explosive energy and tons of tannin, the 2014 is built for extended cellaring. Expressive floral and savory notes hover out of the glass in this…
