Looking The Part: Pichon-Baron 1953 – 2015 (Jan 2019)

The 1995 Pichon-Baron is a wine that tasted extremely well several years ago, but I wonder how well it is continuing to evolve. The bouquet feels a little smudged, scents of iodine and cassis merging with blackberry and pencil lead; it is a little meandering and missing a sense of focus. The palate is medium-bodied…

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Good red-ruby color. Black cherry, beefsteak tomato and licorice scents are currently dominated by nutty, cedary oak; less nuanced than the ’96, even allowing for the bottling. Sweet entry, then good intensity of flavor, with the cassis fruit complicated by the nutty note. A bit four-square compared to the ’96, yet not as dense or…

Looking Backward/Looking Forward: 2000 vs 2001 Bordeaux (Sep 2021)

The 2000 Les Forts de Latour has a very perfumed and floral bouquet, beautifully defined, precise and precocious; hints of eucalyptus emerge with time. The palate is well balanced and intense, delivering black fruit laced with mint and tar. The concentrated finish gently grips the mouth. This is only just beginning to show what it…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Very good red-ruby. Exotic aromas of roasted red berries and spices. Sweet, lush, broad and impressively ripe. Flavors of black cherry, licorice and shoe polish are at once classic Pauillac and compellingly exuberant. Complicated by a lovely floral element. Finishes very long, bright and sweet. A superb vintage for this wine.

1999, 1998 and 1997 Bordeaux (May 2000)

Deep red. Aromatic, very expressive nose combines black plum, currant, cedar, coconut, licorice and violet. Not especially dense or sweet in the mouth but offers youthful freshness and noteworthy flavor intensity. Narrows a bit on the back end, which features slightly hard tannins and moderate length. Perhaps not completely recovered from the bottling.

Long Distance Runner: Brane-Cantenac 1924-2015 (Jan 2019)

The 1983 Brane-Cantenac was picked from September 26 to October 17 following a blissfully clement late September. It is showing signs of maturity on the rim, but do not let that dissuade you from venturing further, because it boasts a sublime bouquet of red berry fruit, pressed flowers, cedar and hints of cigar humidor. Just…
