A Century of Bordeaux: The Eights (May 2018)

The 1998 Talbot remains youthful in appearance. Certainly the bouquet has remained vigorous and with commendable fruit concentration over 20-years, replete with red cherries, cranberry and blackcurrant scents, cedar and hints of blue fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, a judicious line of acidity, harmonious and linear but with satisfying depth. There…

2000, 1999 and 1998 Bordeaux (May 2001)

Good medium ruby. Medicinal black cherry, black plum, licorice and dark chocolate on the nose, plus a faint meaty quality. Juicy but quite tight, with rather austere flavors of black fruits and herbs. Shows good flavor intensity but lacks pliancy. Tannins seem a bit tough.

1998, 1997 and 1996 Bordeaux (May 1999)

Deep ruby-red. Cassis, black olive, menthol and smoke on the nose. Rather unforthcoming in the middle palate today. In a distinctly drier style despite showing a ripe note of chocolate. Good but not outstanding flavor intensity. The tannins and acids seem a bit tough, even compared to the ’98. Perhaps simply going through a sullen…

Lagrange 1959-2015 (Dec 2020)

The 1996 Lagrange has long been my favourite vintage from the 1990s. It was picked from 26 September to 11 October. This is a level up in quality over the previous vintage with far more delineation and complexity: blackberry, wild hedgerow, sandalwood and light dried blood aromas. The palate is fully matured with firm tannin,…

Three Vertical Tastings (Sep 2004)

(very much a cabernet-dominated vintage, with 57% cabernet sauvignon and 36% merlot) Bright medium ruby. Highly complex aromas of blackberry, violet pastille, eucalyptus, leather and game. Wonderfully sweet but with terrific grip, even a touch of youthful austerity. Very classy, subtle wine with terrific inner-mouth energy. Builds very slowly on the back half, finishing with…
