Domaine de la Romanée-Conti: The 2019s (Jun 2022)

The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru is a powerhouse. Dark, rich and explosive, the 2019 packs a huge punch. There is plenty of intensity in the blue/purplish-tinged fruit. The domaine’s Echézeaux is often a charmer, but that is not the case here, at least not today. At times, the 2019 feels a bit heavy. It will…

2018 Burgundy: Confounded Expectations (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a very deep hue. The extraordinarily pure bouquet features black cherries intermingling with blueberry and oyster shell, and later a hint of potpourri. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, edgy and stony, with dark berry fruit and a little spicier than I recall apropos of previous Echézeaux at…

2014 and 2013 Northern Rhône: Great Wines If You Can Find Them (Mar 2016)

(aged for 42 months in new oak): Inky ruby. A highly complex bouquet evokes candied dark berries, cherry cola, incense and potpourri. Offers intense, seductively sweet black and blue fruit, cola and violet pastille flavors enlivened by juicy acidity and peppery spices. Closes extremely long and juicy, displaying a bright mineral quality and building tannins…

2011 Bordeaux from the Bottle (Jul 2014)

Dark red-ruby. Rather open-knit, subdued aromas of strawberry and minerals. Clean, fresh and juicy, with bright if not especially concentrated flavors of red berries, spring flowers and fresh citrus fruits. Clean and vibrant on the moderately long finish, but could use a little more density and flesh.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

(a 50/50 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot) Bright, full ruby. Violet, blackberry and licorice on the nose. Bright, juicy and focused, with very good density and purity of black fruit flavors. Finishes with fairly full, slightly drying tannins but has the strength of material to support its solid structure. Should develop slowly. A good…

2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Lafite-Rothschild is a mesmerizing wine that shows how compelling the vintage is on the Left Bank. Elegant, creamy and exquisitely layered, the 2019 Lafite conquers all the senses. There is tremendous density and power that belies the 12.8% alcohol, but then again, that can be the magic of Bordeaux. Classic Lafite red plum…
