The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Good full red. Redcurrant, raspberry and a whiff of mushroom on the nose. Supple on entry, then perfumed in the middle, with clean, fresh, slightly clenched black cherry and redcurrant flavors. Turns a bit dry toward the back, finishing with floral red fruit flavors and a faint minty quality.

2014 Barolo: Late Releases (Nov 2018)

The 2014 Barolo Prapò is delicate, aromatic and nuanced, and yet also shows quite a bit of Serralunga muscles. Sage, mint, tobacco, rose petal and blood orange give the 2014 much of its beguiling personality. Dark and inviting, the 2014 has much to offer. I can’t wait to taste this wine in a more normal…

The Grand Vin of the North: San Leonardo (Jul 2020)

The 1997 San Leonardo is stunning from the first tilt of the glass. The wine shows wonderfully mature but still vibrant, bright cherries laced with white pepper and geranium. Hints of moist earth come forward. Silky, deep and fleshy textures prevail, yet they are in perfect balance. Ripe red and black fruits soothe, offset by…

2019 Rosé Roundup (Aug 2019)

Limpid orange-pink. Intensely perfumed aromas of fresh red berries, nectarine, blood orange and pungent flowers, along with subtle hints of smoky minerals, fennel and vanilla that emerge with air. Densely packed but surprisingly lithe thanks to a core of minerality that drives intense, deeply concentrated strawberry, cherry, orange zest and candied lavender flavors. Finishes extremely…

New Releases from the Tuscan Coast (Jan 2021)

The 2017 Keir is 100% Syrah done in terra cotta, with a fair amount of whole clusters. That approach brings out a more savory, floral side of Syrah as compared to the Syrah Per Sempre, along with a distinctly red-toned fruit profile and elements of feral/earthy intensity that are quite intriguing. There is just a…

Finding Cool Sunshine: South Africa (Apr 2021)

The 2019 Fleurfontein comprises pure Sauvignon Blanc and was matured in Hungarian and French oak for 18 months. It has a fabulous bouquet of irresistible scents of honey, apricot jam, mango and passion fruit, all beautifully defined. The palate is balanced with a fine bead of acidity that slices effortlessly though the marmalade and quince…
