Vintage Seeks Home: Bordeaux 2017 In Bottle (Jan 2020)

The 2017 Hosanna was one of my favourite crus from Ets J-P Moueix from barrel. Now in bottle, it remains a delightful Pomerol. It has a generous and beautifully defined bouquet with ample red cherry, crushed strawberry and light black truffle aromas that are actually reminiscent of Bélair-Monange. The palate is medium-bodied but denser, thicker…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Medium red-ruby. Roasted berries, musky espresso, tobacco leaf and a whiff of prune on the nose. Lush and supple, with more obvious sweetness than the 2005 but less shape and thrust. In a chunky style. My suspicion is that the 2005 will ultimately turn out to be a more refined and satisfying wine.

Bordeaux 2018: Not Back in Black (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Haut-Batailley has come together well. Plump and juicy in feel, the 2018 possesses quite a bit of creaminess in its inky dark fruit, chocolate, spice and leather. The new oak is prominent at this stage. Even so, this is nicely done and promising.

The Future’s Not What It Was: Bordeaux 2018 (Nov 2019)

The 2018 Haut-Batailley has a sweet, opulent bouquet of macerated black cherries, blueberry, hints of fresh fig and pressed violets. The palate is quite full-bodied, exerting a gentle grip on the entry, and the layers of black fruit are framed by supple tannins. The acidity is nicely judged here (pH 3.61), and it fans out…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Good bright red. Raspberry, tobacco and minerals on the very fresh nose. Sweet and lush but firm, with very rich, spicy flavors of currant, tobacco and toasty oak. Rather full in alcohol and distinctly silky in texture but not at all overextracted. An impressively concentrated and exuberant 2003, finishing with substantial dusty tannins.

2015 Bordeaux: Every Bottle Tells a Story… (Feb 2018)

The 2015 Haut-Bages Libéral is a bold, direct wine with lovely fruit intensity, good structure and fine overall balance. Today, the 2015 is quite closed in on itself, but there is good depth and persistence through the mid-palate and into the finish. It will be interesting to see if the 2015 acquires a bit more…
