A Century of Bordeaux: The Twos (Sep 2022)

The 2012 Vieux Château Certan is relatively complex on the nose: red fruit, leather, balsam and lavender, well defined and nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a keen thread of acidity, harmonious and nimble yet with a filigree and detailed finish that beckons you back for another sip. This is one of…

Bordeaux 2012: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (May 2013)

Good full ruby. Cool, medicinal aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, violet and mint. Then silky and deep on the palate, offering pure dark berry and floral flavors and an attractive combination of stuffing and energy. Finishes perfumed and very long, with suave, fine-grained tannins. Another very successful VCC in the making.

A Century – Not Out: Talbot 1919-2010 (Oct 2019)

The 2006 Talbot offers this Saint-Julien’s trademark cedar and tobacco scents and as I remarked previously, there is a scent of walking around a stately home. The palate is medium-bodied with decent weight, rather austere in style and needing more flesh to come through on the finish. Respectable given the vintage but not the most…

The Top Clarets of 2006 (May 2009)

Medium ruby-red. Wild aromas of cassis, minerals, leather and meat. Supple and sweet but with modest grip and cut to the redcurrant and leather flavors. The tannins build, leaving the finish a bit tough.

Looking Backward/Looking Forward: 2000 vs 2001 Bordeaux (Sep 2021)

The 2001 Pavillon Rouge de Château Margaux has held up nicely over the past two decades. Brambly red fruit features on the nose, along with touches of undergrowth and rose petal, and orange peel percolates up with aeration in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle, pliant tannins. Soft in texture, maybe, yet well…

2001, 2000 and 1999 Bordeaux (May 2002)

Bright medium ruby. Blackberry, licorice and a whiff of tobacco on the cool nose. Sweet and moderately dense, with currant and oak flavors. Not in the same class as the 2000 in terms of stuffing and grip. Finishes with slightly dusty tannins and good length.
