2001, 2000 and 1999 Bordeaux (May 2002)

Medium ruby. Sappy black fruit aromas complicated by leather, dark chocolate and menthol. Fresh and primary but quite firm, even a bit austere, in the middle palate. Offers moderate density and finishes with slightly tough tannins. A more classic but also somewhat harder style of wine than the 2000.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Weathers the Challenges and Changes (Oct 2021)

Deep ruby-red. Ripe, spice-accented red and dark berry scents, along with hints of succulent herbs and flowers. Broad and fleshy on entry, offering appealingly sweet cherry and black raspberry flavors that tighten up through the midpalate. Smooth, even tannins build on a long, spicy finish that strongly echoes the berry and floral notes.

Dark plum, lavender, new leather, spice and grilled herbs run through this decidedly potent Saint-Julien. Readers will have to give the 2015 at least a few years to shed some of its formidable tannins. In…
