2006 and 2005 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2008)

Deep, bright red. Explosively perfumed nose offers seductive raspberry, kirsch and floral scents, with a suave mineral underpinning. Extremely fresh, with precise red fruit and floral pastille flavors strongly reminiscent of a broad-shouldered pinot noir. Finishes with outstanding clarity, sweetness and persistence.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2005: The Grand Backbone Vintage

The 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau is initially shy, but with aeration reveals pronounced tobacco, forest floor, leather and dried thyme. Full-bodied with slightly chalky tannins, it is built on a solid tannic frame. Decant for an hour to unlock its depth.

Cellar Favorite: Castello dei Rampolla: Library Releases (Oct 2024)

The 2006 D’Alceo is a dark, sensual beauty. Black cherry, plum, licorice, incense, mocha, dried flowers and herbs build slowly in a regal, plush D’Alceo that is approaching its prime. 2015 Bordeaux: Every Bottle Tells a Story… (Feb 2018)

Even better from bottle than it was from barrel, the 2015 Fonplégade is absolutely gorgeous. Rich and sumptuous, but superbly refined, the 2015 exudes class. The dark cherry, plum, espresso, rose petal and blood orange notes open up effortlessly. Time in the glass brings out the wine’s underlying brightness, tension and energy. Everything about the…

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

Dark cherry, plum, grilled herbs and smoke flesh out in the 2014 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron, a second wine that is essentially composed of the barrels that don’t make it into the Grand Vin. I would prefer to drink this forward, succulent wine over the next handful of years. The blend is 55 %…
