Checking in on the 1999 Barbarescos (Aug 2014)

Gaja’s 1999 Barbaresco is quite pretty. Freshly cut flowers, sweet red berries, licorice and dried herbs are some of the many nuances that are woven together in the glass. Soft, silky and impeccably perfumed, the 1999 impresses for its balance, poise and overall sense of harmony. The sensual feminity of Barbaresco comes through very nicely….

Focus on Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2002)

Dark red. Aromatic nose combines currant, plum, tobacco and dried flowers. Sweet and rich but very closed today, with its spine and acidity in the foreground. Finishes with substantial tongue-dusting tannins and a hint of warmth.

Mâconnais 2016 and 2015: Dealing with the Elements (Nov 2017)

Bright, light yellow. Musky aromas of yellow apple, mirabelle, ginger and minerals. Supple, round, spicy wine, kept fresh by some unabsorbed CO2. Quite ripe in the style of the year but dry and savory, displaying a slightly saline umami texture and less fruit sweetness than the Mâcon-Solutré. Yellow fruits and dusty minerals carry well on…

Mâconnais: The Headspinning 2015s and The Classic 2014s (Oct 2016)

Bright, light yellow. Subtly perfumed aromas of apple, minerals, ginger and flowers. Supple, broad and dry, offering a refreshing salinity to its mineral and apple flavors. Very suave and fine-grained, and smooth and persistent on the aftertaste. Attractive already but there’s no rush to drink this.

The Best New Wines from Australia (Jul 2000)

Bright ruby. Blackberry, bitter chocolate, cracked pepper, eucalyptus and a whiff of game on the complex nose. Fat, sweet and dense, with concentrated blackberry, dark chocolate and mint flavors. From small berries, and it shows in the wine intensity. Finishes with dusty, even, tongue-coating tannins and notes of mint, spicy oak and blackberry. Quite young…

Domaines Great & Small: Burgundy Interim Report (Aug 2025)

The 2023 Puligny-Montrachet Village is a big step up from the Bourgogne Blanc in this vintage, with crisp green apple, crushed stone and light orange blossom scents. The palate is fresh and taut with a silver bead of acidity. Vibrant, surfeit and energetic, this is a seriously fine Village Cru flirting with Premier Cru complexity.
