Focus on Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2007)

Good full, deep red. Slightly high-toned aromas of herbs, licorice, menthol and flowers, with a whiff of leather. Supple, broad and dry, with plum and menthol flavors along with a slightly artificial floral element. Finishes rather austere and dry. A classically styled Barolo that strikes me as a tad rustic.

Santa Barbara: Out of Many, One (Aug 2025)

The 2023 Pinot Noir Estate is very shut down and tightly coiled today, hesitant to express much beyond a brooding, powerful tannic structure. Black sage, lavender and pomegranate coyly sizzle up from the glass with much coaxing. This needs considerable time to flesh out and put on some weight. Old school all the way.

Santa Barbara: California’s Undiscovered Jewel (Aug 2024)

The 2023 Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills) is a total delight. Fresh, aromatic and very pretty, the 2023 is all class. Freshly cut flowers, red-toned fruit, orange peel, spice, mint and white pepper soar out of the glass. This deceptively medium-bodied Pinot is such a charmer. A dollop of stems (10%) adds perfume without dominating…

Making the Case for Campania (Sep 2025)

The 2023 Fiano Kratos bursts from the glass with a distinctly mineral bouquet, mixing smoke, crushed rocks and lime zest. Zesty green apples and sour citrus splash across the palate as a saline tinge peppers the senses. The mouth is left salivating for more as the 2023 finishes long yet juicy with a sweet and…

2007 and 2006 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2009)

Deep ruby-red. Ripe raspberry and cherry on the nose, with black pepper and baking spices adding energy. Offers strikingly pure sweet red berry flavors, supple texture and fine-grained tannins. The very long finish echoes with cherry. A precise and seductively sweet wine that’s already delicious but really deserves patience.

Champagne – 2019 Fall Releases (Dec 2019)

The 2014 Brut Blanc de Blancs L’Esprit is airy, gracious and super-expressive. Another few months in bottle have really helped it come together nicely. Bright, sculpted and beautifully lifted, the 2014 is all class from start to finish, and another example of just how attractive the best wines of 2014 are turning out to be….
