2001 and 2000 Red Burgundies (Mar 2003)

Good full medium red. Reticent nose hints at licorice and menthol, along with a hint of apple. Then fresh, sweet and round but a bit austere in the middle palate. Boasts a creamy texture that suggests small grapes but this is still a bit reserved. Finishes with nicely buffered, sweet tannins and very good persistence.

Beringer’s Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon: One of Napa Valley’s First Cult Wines (Jul 2015)

(13.6% alcohol; 18% Chabot, 12% St. Helena, 47% Bancroft, 20% Tre Colline and 3% Cabernet Franc): Good deep red. Complex but reticent aromas of redcurrant, plum, dried flowers and minerals. Broad, dry and backward; strongly mineral-driven and showing little easy sweetness. Substantial dusty tannins could still use another few years of patience–or some time in…

Horizontal Tasting of Napa Valley’s 1994 Cabernets (Jul 2015)

(14.4% alcohol): Deep medium red. Reticent but complex aromas of redcurrant, plum, minerals and dried flowers. Broad, dry and rather backward; an old-fashioned Napa Cabernet with strong minerality and a restrained sweetness. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins. Decant this if you plan to open it anytime soon.

The 2005 Siran, which predates the arrival of Edouard Miailhe, has a straightforward and rather simplistic bouquet—nothing bad, but it clearly doesn't have the terroir expression and complexity found nowadays. A menthol-infused bouquet introduces a quite rustic palate with a solid, black pepper- and savoury-tinged finish. Perhaps missing Margaux traits, this lacks a bit of…

2011 and 2010 White Burgundies (Sep 2012)

Bright, light yellow. Musky peach, fresh apricot, stone and smoky oak char on the nose. Concentrated and dense but pliant and accessible, with very ripe yellow fruit flavors nicely enlivened by harmonious acidity. Round, fresh wine with lovely length.

Now, For My Latest Trick: Burgundy 2022 (Jan 2024)

The 2022 Echézeaux is a very pretty, open-knit wine. Sweet floral notes open first, giving way to bright red-toned cherry fruit, rose petal, mint, orange peel and white pepper. Aromatic and refined, the 2022 offers plenty of immediacy, but also has the energy to develop nicely in bottle for many years to come. – Antonio…
