Herding Cats: Burgfest 2020 – The Reds (Oct 2024)

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru has a warm bouquet. There’s more red fruit here, with floral scents emerging—violet and peony—fine delineation and nicely integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly edgier tannins, fine structure, a little more peppery in style (possibly due to the whole bunch), gentle grip, and…

2025 Champagne: New Releases (Apr 2025)

The 2008 Dom Pérignon Rosé has finally started to fill out. A bit. Rose petal, pink grapefruit, white pepper, slate, mint and sage gradually appear in the glass. The 2008 remains rather austere, befitting a cold vintage with what has now become a very rare October harvest. Vibrant and yet also clenched, the 2008 still…

2017 & 2018 Napa Valley In Depth (Jan 2020)

The 2016 The Maiden is every bit as stunning from bottle as it was from barrel. Dark cherry, mocha, spice and new leather infuse the 2016 with tons of character. Deep, sensual and wonderfully inviting, the 2016 has so much to offer. It's one of the best – maybe the best – Maiden I have…

The 2009 Red Burgundies from Bottle (Apr 2012)

This is not a great showing for the 2009 Echézeaux. Today the structural elements seem to dominate the wine’s balance. I find little of the seduction and charm the Echezeaux showed when its was in barrel. It is hard to believe this is a representative bottle.

2009 Red Burgundies (Mar 2012)

Good bright, dark red. High-pitched, expressive aromas of raspberry, strawberry, minerals, pepper, wild herbs and flowers. Initially quite tight and peppery, with a dry-edged character, this slightly raw wine expanded somewhat with aeration. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and an impression of peppery austerity. The most inscrutable of this set of wines today.

2010 Red Burgundies (Mar 2013)

Good bright, deep red. Highly nuanced aromas of strawberry, flowers, cocoa powder, mocha, smoke and earth. Sweet and seamless yet taut too, already displaying great personality to the flavors of red and darker fruits, salt, pepper and earth. Wonderfully soil-driven wine with a very sweet, very long finish featuring noble, fine-grained tannins and terrific sappy…
