Bordeaux 2010: All That Glitters… (May 2011)

(a blend of 54% merlot, 40% cabernet sauvignon and 6% petit verdot; 90 IPT; 3.66 pH; 14.5 % alcohol) Deep ruby-red. Captivatingly deep, brooding aromas of blackcurrant, violet and dried herbs. Rich, suave and fine-grained, with delicate blackberry, cassis and mineral flavors. In a distinctly elegant style thanks to lively harmonious acids. The broad, long,…

Squares & Circles: Bordeaux ‘10 At Ten (Apr 2020)

The 2010 Palmer is a broody, tertiary bouquet with pencil lead infused black fruit that gains intensity with aeration. This is very classic in style, quintessentially 2010. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, a strong marine influence here with touches of seaweed infusing the black fruit. Very well balanced, not quite as precise…

Squares & Circles: Bordeaux ‘10 At Ten (Apr 2020)

The 2010 Palmer has an outgoing, intense and multifaceted bouquet with black cherries, boysenberry, crushed violets and hints of cassis – your quintessential Margaux turned up to eleven. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Headier than its Margaux peers, it builds in the mouth with a complex,…

The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

Bright, deep medium ruby. Exotic, expressive nose offers blueberry, black cherry, violet, bitter chocolate, licorice, smoke and spices, with a subtle leather nuance in the deep background. The tightly coiled, penetrating palate offers uncanny density without weight, with dark berry and floral flavors enlivened by deep minerality. A wine of outstanding clarity, energy and class….

Now, For My Latest Trick: Burgundy 2022 (Jan 2024)

The 2022 Beaune Les Bressandes 1er Cru has darker fruit than the Savigny, although I don’t find quite the same level of precision. The palate is a little rustic at the moment, primal with touches of brine towards the finish. It needs to forage a little more finesse and delineation.

1999 and 1998 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2001)

Ruby-red. Roasted berries, flint, mocha and animal fur on the expressive nose. Rich and voluminous but uncompromisingly dry in the mouth, with pure flavors of crystallized dark berries. Dense and deep. Finishes very long, with dusty, tongue-coating tannins and superb persistence. This is impressive.
