The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Good bright deep red. Highly nuanced, fresh aromas of cherry, minerals, tobacco, herbs and spices. Sweet and fat but lively, with a fine-grained texture and superb inner-mouth energy and depth for the vintage. Finishes with suave tannins and mounting flavors of dark berries, spices, herbs and smoked meat. The pH here is 3.65, which winemaker…

Châteauneuf du Pape: The Lively 2013s and Lush 2012s (Apr 2015)

Inky ruby. Explosive aromas of dark berry preserves, incense and lavender, with a smoky overtone and bright minerality. Pliant and seamless in the mouth, offering intense, palate-staining cassis and blueberry flavors that are energized by juicy acidity. Shows real power and focus on the strikingly long finish, which features velvety tannins and a hint of…

Larcis Ducasse Retrospective: 1945-2014 (Mar 2017)

One of my absolute favorite wines in this vertical is the 2008 Larcis Ducasse. Black cherry, plum, smoke, licorice, graphite and incense wrap around the palate in a deep, unctuous Saint-Émilion endowed with remarkable depth and pure sensuality. The tannins have softened enough that the 2008 can be enjoyed relatively soon, but it also has…

Saturday Morning: Larcis Ducasse 1945-2017 (Oct 2020)

The 2008 Larcis Ducasse has a precocious bouquet that you might mistake for a 2009: kirsch, mint, star anis, black cherries and a touch of Xmas cake. It just comes across a little too strong for my liking and I still find some VA here, perhaps more so than the previous bottle tasted a year…

New Releases from Australia, Part 1 (Jul 2007)

Inky violet. Vibrant, perfumed nose melds blackberry, cassis, kirsch, licorice and dried flowers. On the palate, this shiraz shows an intriguing mix of sweet dark fruit flavors and firmer earth and mineral notes, with big but supple tannins contributing structure. The palate-staining finish features notes of bitter cherry, cured tobacco and high-octane chocolate. Nothing obvious…

Bordeaux ’08: Far Better Than Expected (May 2009)

Straw-yellow tinged with green and gold. Initially subdued nose hints at lemon curd, then opens with air to reveal tangerine and powdered stone aromas. Densely packed apricot and yellow melon flavors are nicely lifted by bright acids and complicated by a hint of ripe tropical fruit. Finishes long and pure, with a lovely lingering minerality.
