The 2008 Clarets (Jul 2011)

Bright ruby-red. Blackberry, lavender and oak-driven cola, mocha and spices on the nose and palate. Lush, round and mouthfilling, with harmonious acidity restraining the wine’s sweetness. Vinous, long wine with impressive focus.

In a Tuscan State of Mind (Oct 2010)

The 2007 Siepi is a Sangiovese/Merlot blend that spent roughly 18 months in French oak prior to being bottled. Dark ripe fruit, chocolate, new leather and scorched earth come together beautifully in this dark, weighty Siepi. Once again, I am struck by the purity and definition of the fruit, a hallmark of the best 2007s….

2012 and 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas and Vacqueyras (Jan 2014)

Dark ruby. Black and blue fruit scents show serious power and excellent focus. Sappy, expansive and alluringly sweet, offering palate-staining boysenberry and cherry-cola flavors and a touch of spicecake. Floral and mineral notes build on the potent finish, which is framed by smooth, fully absorbed tannins.

The 2005 Pavillon Rouge is in a beautiful spot right now where it is just beginning to show signs of aromatic complexity and nuance. At fifteen years of age, the DNA of the vintage remains – Pavillon Rouge is a potent, hulking wine. Sweet tobacco, cedar, mint, dried flowers and anise add layers of nuance….

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

(48% each merlot and cabernet sauvignon plus 4% petit verdot) Bright ruby-red. Very pure aromas of blackberry, cassis, violet and spicy oak. Very ripe and rich in the mouth, with a much more pliant texture than the grand vin Quite chewy on the back end, finishing with broad, sweet tannins and a touch of warmth….

Six Decades of Pavie-Macquin: 1928-2018 (May 2020)

The 2007 Pavie-Macquin is another wine from a challenging year. The early part of the season was cool and rainy. August turned quite hot and humid. The team waited as long as possible to harvest, but in some years there is not much that can be done. Grilled herb, licorice, smoke, game and tobacco give…
