Caught Somewhere in Time: Clos de Tart 1887-2016 (Feb 2019)

From the three youngest parcels in the clos, the 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis La Forge de Tart 1er Cru has a fragrant blackberry and briar bouquet plus light pressed iris aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, displaying touches of licorice on the entry, and nicely balanced with hints of graphite toward the finish. Fine.

Herding Cats: Burgfest 2020 – The Reds (Oct 2024)

The 2020 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a strong menthol note on the nose, with aniseed coming through, which detracts from its terroir expression and delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, more opulent than its peers, exotic and “sunny” with a spicy Piedmont-kissed finish. It is enjoyable if dictated by the vintage. Tasted…

Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2020 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has an exquisite bouquet with beautifully-defined brambly red fruit, undergrowth and minerals, an oyster shell scent becoming more intense with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins, lightly spiced with a harmonious and cohesive finish that has real body and depth. Outstanding.

Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has an intense, multi-faceted bouquet with vivacious black and red berry fruit, quite a noticeable marine/estuarine influence in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, fine acidity, taut and fresh with a harmonious, silky smooth finish. Lovely build in the mouth, this is a very…

2018 Burgundy: Confounded Expectations (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Musigny Grand Cru has a much more composed and refined, almost understated bouquet compared to the Bonnes-Mares. Red berry fruit, sous-bois, touches of sandalwood and bay leaf aromas develop in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Lively and full of tension, displaying just a…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2004)

Full ruby-red color. Very fresh aromas of blackberry, cassis, licorice and dark chocolate; not at all surmuri Then ripe but aromatic and juicy in the mouth, with penetrating, rather powerful flavors of dark berries, minerals and dark chocolate. Conveys an impression of inner-mouth energy, one side-effect of which is that the wine’s substantial density is…
