The 2009 Clarets (Jul 2012)

Bright, full ruby. Pure, vibrant aromas of cassis, blackberry, blueberry, licorice, graphite and leather. Like liquid velvet on entry, then energetic and sharply delineated in the mid-palate, with penetrating minerality intensifying the pristine dark berry flavors. Most impressive today on the extremely long, perfumed finish, which shows suave, noble tannins and a magically light touch…

Looking Backward/Looking Forward: 2000 vs 2001 Bordeaux (Sep 2021)

The 2000 Grand Puy-Lacoste is quintessential Pauillac on the nose, showing more secondary development compared to the last bottle tasted five years back. Blackberry, wild hedgerow, black tea and cloves appear first, followed later by subtle minty aromas, all well defined, intense and classic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and a…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Bright medium ruby-red. Exotic black fruits and spices on the nose, with notes of chocolate, smoke and game; showing its 29% merlot component today. Rich, broad and chocolatey; sweet, creamy and superripe. A big, mouthfilling vintage for this chateau, combining a classic Pauillac medicinal character with the chocolatey ripeness of the vintage. Thick but nicely…

The 2009 Red Burgundies (May 2011)

The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes powers through the palate with an authoritative core of dark fruit. This shows quite a bit of muscle and density. Minerals and crushed rocks wrap around the intense, building finish.

2009 Red Burgundy (Jan 2011)

Full medium ruby. High-pitched aromas of blackberry, pepper and mint. Then rich, creamy and liqueur-like, with compelling sweetness to the blackberry and blueberry flavors. Lush, seamless, impressively broad village wine that retains good verve in spite of its full ripeness. Finishes with very fine tannins.

New Vintage Champagnes (Nov 2007)

Medium yellow. Smoky orchard fruit and redcurrant aromas are underscored by toasty brioche and dried flowers. Bracingly fresh but ample and round, with chewy texture and deep pear and peach flavors. Finishes broad and long, leaving smoky minerals and bitter lemon zest behind.
