2019 Tuscany Preview (Mar 2022)

The 2019 Guado al Tasso is a model of total refinement. Deeply pitched spice, mocha and leather nuances meld into a core of plush dark fruit as the 2019 reveals its considerable charms. The aromatics alone are mesmerizing, but the 2019 has so much more to offer. I admire the wine’s balance and allure, both…

2015 Bordeaux: Every Bottle Tells a Story… (Feb 2018)

The 2015 Alter Ego is just as alluring today as it was from barrel. Sweet floral notes, spice, dried cherry, mint, tobacco and crushed flowers are all laced together in this silky, mid-weight Margaux. Time in barrel has mellowed some of the exuberance the 2015 showed from barrel. Open-knit, supple and super-expressive, Alter Ego is…

Finally: Bordeaux 2015 In Bottle (Jul 2019)

The 2015 Alter Ego de Palmer has an odd, slightly static bouquet of black cherry and mulberry fruit that is not as vigorous as some of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with soft, furry tannin. There is good density here, but not the tension and precision that define the best wines of the appellation….

Southwold: 2016 Bordeaux Blind (Aug 2020)

The 2016 Batailley has an attractive, meaty bouquet with more red fruit than black, unlike many of its peers. With aeration it appears to gain more floral notes and lift. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, linear and focused, offering pencil lead, cedar and light spicy notes toward the conservative, controlled finish. A mocha-tinged…

A Look Back at the 2004 & 2005 Barbarescos (Jun 2016)

The 2005 Barbaresco Asili is a jewel of a wine. I suppose the 2005 doesn’t have the sweetness not finesse of the very best vintages, but it comes very, very close. The ineffable Asili perfume comes through beautifully in a sensual, complete Barbaresco that will thrill Giacosa fans. Rose petal, mint, plum and cinnamon are…

Focus on Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2009)

Medium red. Sexy nose combines redcurrant, raspberry, dried rose and tobacco. Shows an almost candied sweetness in the mouth, but with a burst of harmonious acidity behind it. Finishes with fairly powerful, granular tannins and lovely floral persistence. Elegant and scented Barbaresco: I like this style.
