The Dalmatian Vintage: Bordeaux 2023 (Apr 2024)

The 2023 Carruades de Lafite is notable for some of the Cabernet being picked prior to the Merlot, between September 7 and 29. This year, there is no Cabernet Franc or Petit Verdot in the blend. It has a far superior bouquet to some of the vintages I was tasting a decade or so ago—much…

The 2009 Clarets (Jul 2012)

(90% merlot with 5% each cabernet franc and sauvignon): Deep ruby. Superripe, slightly inky aromas of blueberry liqueur and violet. Like liquid silk in the mouth, but with surprisingly firm acidity leavening the wine’s sweetness and giving shape to its blue and black fruit flavors. A compellingly rich, thick wine with palate-staining length and the…

Bordeaux 2009: The Best Ever? (May 2010)

(90% merlot, 5% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon; cropped at 22 hectoliters per hectare; 14.3% alcohol; 100% new oak) Very dark, nearly impenetrable ruby-purple. Initially muted nose hints at fresh blackcurrant and violet with air. Dense and thick, with superripe black fruit and pepper flavors and a smoother mouth feel than some past vintages…

Southwold: 2016 Bordeaux Blind (Aug 2020)

The 2016 d’Issan has a well-defined bouquet of blackberry, violets, rose petal and light undergrowth aromas, displaying fine lift and great intensity. The medium-bodied palate offers fine-grained tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Fresh and vibrant, with a very harmonious, elegant and persistent finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting.

2016 Bordeaux…It’s All In The Bottle (Jan 2019)

Just as it was from barrel, the 2016 d’Issan is bold and succulent. Dark cherry, iron, smoke, tobacco, leather and dried rose petal all fill out nicely in a supple, easygoing Margaux. The 2016 will benefit from another few years in bottle, although it is nevertheless quite fine, even in the early going. It will…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

(a blend of 79% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot, 4% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc) Good deep red-ruby. Musky black cherry, raspberry, leather, licorice and herbs on the slightly medicinal nose. Sweet, supple and fruity, with herbal and licorice flavors framed by brisk acidity. Distinctly peppery in the middle and on the slightly hard-edged finish….
