Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Ferrière is tremendous. Dark fruit, lavender, gravel, incense and dark spice are some of the many notes that develop. A wine of vertical, explosive energy, Ferrière is fabulous. The tannins are bruising today, so readers will have to be patient, but all the ingredients are there for the 2020 to be superb. There…

Thrice Is Nice: Bordeaux 2020 in Bottle (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Ferrière is aged 80% in barrel (40% new) and 20% in amphora and concrete eggs with minimal SO2. The bouquet is quite intense and pure, with black cherries, raspberry and light graphite scents. It becomes increasingly floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly creamy texture on the entry, impressive depth,…

Enticingly Fallible: Bordeaux 2021 En Primeur (May 2022)

The 2021 Beychevelle has a pleasant, light bouquet that needs coaxing from the glass, eventually offering blackberry, briar, peppermint and sage aromas. The oak here is neatly integrated, though it does not possess the dimension of the previous vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a firm grip on the entry. The Cabernet Sauvignon is…

2021 Bordeaux En Primeur: Back to Classicism (May 2022)

The 2021 Beychevelle is rich and sumptuous, but not quite as pushed in that direction as some recent vintages have been. Then again, that sort of opulence was simply not possible in 2021. Even so, the 2021 flows with dark blue/purplish fruit, incense, espresso, mocha, menthol and licorice. All the elements are so well balanced….

2021 Bordeaux: L’Enfant Terrible (Feb 2024)

The 2021 Beychevelle is elegant, understated and classy. Medium in body and less overt than most recent years, the 2021 is impeccably balanced from start to finish. Dark-toned fruit, gravel, menthol, licorice, spice and new oak build nicely with a bit of time in the glass. This is incredibly harmonious.

2+2=5: Bordeaux 2021 In Bottle (Feb 2024)

The 2021 Beychevelle, incidentally the final vintage to contain Cabernet Franc according to Philippe Blanc, is still a little tight on the nose after bottling in June, but, it has a wonderful sense of purity and delineation. The Cabernet Sauvignon is very expressive here, so much so that you might think there was around 75%…
