2019 Barolo: Back on Track (Jan 2023)

The 2019 Barolo Ginestra opens with very pretty, enticing aromatics. Overall the 2019 feels both soft and forward for this site, always a challenging vineyard to work with. The 2019 is attractive, but also a touch forward. Tobacco, crushed flowers, cedar and dried fruit.

Servants of the Seasons: Burgundy 2021 (Jan 2023)

The 2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune Blanc has an attractive nose with touches of crème brûlée, almond and apple blossom scents. The palate is balanced yet simple, with a twist of sour lemon on the entry, modest depth and a slightly abrupt finish.

New Releases from the Tuscan Maremma (Dec 2024)

The 2019 Scipio, 100% Cabernet Franc, is laced with dried cherry, plum, espresso, pine and menthol. It’s one of the lighter wines in the range this year, carried more by varietal aromatics than anything else. A relatively restrained Franc from the Tuscan Coast, the 2019 is attractive, but it’s not especially immediate. Readers have to…

The A to Z of South Africa (Nov 2023)

The 2021 Red Blend includes 70% whole clusters, matured for 13 months in 500-liter barrels and then a year in foudres. The splendid bouquet displays brambly red plummy fruit, crushed stone, bay leaf, and Japanese green tea in the background. The medium-bodied palate has a touch of menthol on the entry and fine depth. It’s…

The 2019 Napa Valley Cabernets: A Deep Dive (Jan 2022)

The 2020 Zinfandel Old Vines is a powerful, brooding wine marked by searing tannins. Usually the Old Vines has more fruit richness, but in 2020, the tannins are pretty imposing. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, licorice and sweet spice open reluctantly. This is not an easy wine to taste today.

Barbaresco: The Stellar 2021s & Surprising 2022s (Oct 2024)

The 2021 Barbaresco Vigneto Bordini is a very pretty, open-knit wine. Crushed flowers, red cherry/plum fruit, leather, spice, menthol and blood orange are front and center. Wines from Bordini tend to be a bit more tannic, but the 2021 here is pretty approachable. Floral and spice overtones lift the finish.
