New Releases from the Langhe, Roero, Asti & More (May 2019)

The 2013 Barbera Monleale is plump, juicy and exceptionally polished. Sweet red cherry, plum, licorice, minerals, lavender, dark spices and new leather are nicely pushed forward. Readers should expected a nuanced, mid-weight Barbera that offers a more earthy/savory profile than is typical in Barberas from Asti, Alba, Roero or Monferrato. The 2013 is all class.

Friuli Venezia Giulia: The New Releases (Jan 2020)

Golden-tinged yellow; darker than the 2016 Abbazia from Felluga. Aromas and flavors of yellow apple, pear, custard cream and minerals. Sweet and luscious on entry, then more nuanced with sweet spices, wet stones and herbs nicely showcased in the middle and on the long round aftertaste.

Northern Rhône: Where Diversity Ignites the Senses (Mar 2024)

The 2021 Côte-Rôtie La Madinière exhales shy black cherry, wood spice and leafy undertones. Although elegant and refreshing, the 2021 could do with a little more substance and concentration. Light- to medium-bodied and polished, it should drink well right out of the gate.

2016 White Burgundy: Excellent, But Complicated (Sep 2018)

Bright straw-yellow. Aromas of yellow peach and spicy minerality, plus a suggestion of soft citrus fruit. The creamiest and most open-knit of these Meursault bottlings, but with no shortage of underlying acidity and minerality to buffer its sweetness. Displays the density and thickness of the vintage’s better examples but harmonious acidity gives it energy. Not…

2016 White Burgundy: Excellent, But Complicated (Sep 2018)

Pale, slightly green-tinged color. Moderately ripe nose suggests menthol and white pepper, plus an herbal element. Offers good texture and a touch of sweetness but not the purity of the better ’16s at this address. With its juxtaposition of a marzipan hint and underlying minerality, this village wine comes across as a bit disjointed in…

Brunello di Montalcino: The 2012 Brunellos & 2011 Riservas (Mar 2017)

Vivid dark red. Ripe aromas of red cherry, blood orange and stone fruit. Smooth, dense and juicy, with flavors similar to the aromas but complicated by notes of fresh herbs, sweet spices and hints of flint. Long and suave, with noble but youthfully chewy tannins providing support. Knockout classic Brunello, in fact, one of the…
