Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2022: Bring It On (Jun 2024)

The 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape opens with meaty gradations, followed by dried fruits, forest floor, tobacco and grilled herbs. Savory and expressive, this fleshy red remains firmly structured by grippy tannins yet captures wonderful freshness. Finishing with lovely persistence, the 2005 should continue to drink well over the next five years.

The Barossa: An Ascent to Higher Quality (Dec 2021)

Deep, shimmering violet. Expansive, smoke- and spice-accented aromas of cherry liqueur, cassis, coconut and pungent flowers show excellent clarity. Stains the palate with concentrated dark fruit and violet pastille flavors that are complemented by suggestions of mocha, smoked meat and exotic spices. Distinctly generous in character, but there”s also superb energy thanks to a core…

A Century – Not Out: Talbot 1919-2010 (Oct 2019)

The 2005 Talbot was picked from 22 September until 10 October. Having tasted this several times, this might be the best bottle. Deeper in colour than other vintages, it offers much more fruit: blackberry, bilberry and raspberry tinged with cedar and a faint estuarine tang. These aromatics just have more substance than other vintages. The…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Full medium ruby. Very primary nose of cassis, licorice, earth and leather, complicated by an almost exotic note of chocolate. Then suave, broad and dry, with a fine-grained texture and very good palate coverage. Doesn’t currently show the lift or intensity of the best Medoc wines of the vintage, but offers a fleshy, solid impression…

Washington: Neither Smoke Nor Rain Nor Heat Nor Frost of Night… (Dec 2020)

Bright red-ruby. Pungent, pure, wonderfully complex scents of blackberry, dark raspberry, crushed herbs, meat, graphite and black olive accented by black pepper. Incredibly precise, concentrated, saline wine with a sexy wildness and exceptional inner-mouth lift to its flavors of dark berries, licorice, olive tapenade and luncheon meats. Thick and savory but not heavy or flat,…

Cayuse Vineyards’ Syrah Bionic Frog: 2000 – 2014 (Oct 2017)

(13.8%; picked on October 8 and 13, after Baron dropped an additional 20% of his crop in mid-July since the season was three weeks behind; he also did a saignée of another 20% and vinified with 80% whole clusters): Bright, dark red with ruby tones. High-pitched notes of spices, herbs and African violet lift the…
