2004 and 2003 Red Burgundies (Mar 2006)

($1029) Bright red-ruby. Wonderfully complex nose melds raspberry, rose petal, truffley underbrush and exotic spices. Then almost shockingly fresh in the mouth, with penetrating and rather delicate flavors of red berries and flowers. Still quite tightly wound but already offers compelling inner-mouth perfume. Finishes with building tannins and outstanding verve.

Power and Energy: The 2018 and 2017 Northern Rhônes (Apr 2020)

Glass-staining ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, vanilla and smoky minerals, plus a sexy floral note in the background. Gently sweet and expansive on the palate, offering supple blackberry and cherry compote flavors that show sharp clarity and very good depth. Seamless and focused on the persistent, smoke-tinged finish, with velvety…

2016 Bordeaux…It’s All In The Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Pibran is a very pretty, floral Pauillac with lovely red berry character and tons of class. Medium in body, the 2016 will drink well pretty much upon release. Feminine and understated, the 2016 is super-refined from start to finish, not to mention a true joy to taste today.

Looking The Part: Pichon-Baron 1953 – 2015 (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Pibran, which contains 68% Merlot, had just been bottled when I conducted the vertical tasting. It has a fabulous bouquet of black currant and black cherry fruit, beautifully defined and seamlessly integrated with the oak. The medium-bodied palate offers exquisite pure black fruit laced with graphite. It conveys energy and tension, and the…

Bordeaux 2014: The Southwold Tasting (Mar 2018)

The 2014 Talbot has a ripe and generous bouquet with black cherries, boysenberry and light violet petal aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy and chunky tannin, good weight in the mouth if just missing the finesse of its peers towards the finish. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold…

Test of Endurance: Bordeaux 2014 Ten Years On (Mar 2024)

The 2014 Talbot has a pastille-like purity on the nose: black cherries, raspberry, brown spices and a touch of leather. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy opening, fine acidity and a bit chewy with a slightly heady, alcoholic finish that you would equate to a warmer growing season. Maybe trying too hard? It feels…
