Bordeaux 2014: The Southwold Tasting (Mar 2018)

The 2014 Pontet Canet is a controversial showing, dividing the participants who unanimously nailed its identity. It has an opulent but well defined bouquet with black cherries, red plum, raspberry coulis and cedar aromas. Perhaps this is a little exotic for a Pauillac? The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, plenty of dark berry fruit…

A Century of…Fours (Jun 2024)

The bottle of 2014 Pontet-Canet showed better than the previous one at the 10-Year-On tasting in London. This offers much more restraint on the nose. It’s quite precise, with greater mineralité seeping through the black cherry and cassis fruit. The palate has a sorbet-fresh entry, fine tannins and a silky sheen. The oak is fully…

Test of Endurance: Bordeaux 2014 Ten Years On (Mar 2024)

The 2014 Pontet Canet has a high-toned nose, a little more VA than its peers. Macerated cherries, iodine and pressed violets come through with aeration. It exhibits some exotic traits, though I would not describe them as unattractive; they are just perhaps missing Pauillac DNA. The palate is medium-bodied with a juicy entry, slightly lower…

1999, 1998 and 1997 Bordeaux (May 2000)

Excellent ruby-red. Dark berries, licorice and minerals on the nose. Tightly wrapped and firmly minerally in the mouth, with a note of shoe polish. Extremely primary for the vintage. Plenty of richness here. Finishes with toothdusting tannins and excellent length.

Long and Winding Road: Ausone 1912–1999 (Mar 2018)

The 1999 Ausone replicated the impressive performance it showed from barrel. It went through an awkward stage after bottling but now it has reached adulthood, this is a great success for the vintage, a wine that I suspect will be under-estimated against the 2000 and 2001. It has a very intense bouquet with blackberry and…

2001, 2000 and 1999 Bordeaux (May 2002)

Full medium ruby. Aromas of plum syrup, spice cake, minerals, Valrhona chocolate and tobacco. Sweet, suave and fairly full in the mouth, with strong underlying minerality. Finishes subtle and persistent, with dusty, even tannins and some new oak showing.
