Focus on California’s North Coast (May 2005)

(from soil that Mark Aubert describes as 60% rocks) Good full ruby. Hugely complex, somewhat exotic aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, blueberry, plum, mocha, minerals and woodsmoke. Suave, lush, thick and seamless, yet with plenty of inner-palate energy. Very concentrated flavor of creme de cassis, with notes of exotic spices and soy sauce. Finishes…

Checking in on Piedmont’s 2000 Vintage (Jun 2011)

The 2000 Barolo Granbussia is the freshest of these 2000 Baroli from Aldo Conterno. Pretty floral notes meld into a generous core of fruit in this open, generous Granbussia. The 200 should continue to drink well for another decade or so.

Kapcsándy Roberta’s Reserve and Grand Vin (Jun 2019)

Saturated dark ruby. Less expressive and more medicinal and brooding on the nose than the Roberta’s, offering extremely primary scents of cassis, licorice, bitter chocolate and violet. New Releases from Napa Valley (Dec 2011)

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Materium is a gorgeous, polished wine graced with exquisite detail, clarity and focus. Tobacco, cedar and sweet spices add complexity to the fruit in this powerful, expressive 2009. Layers of dark red fruit, mocha and mint wrap around the striking, seamless finish.

The Best of Sonoma (Feb 2012)

The 2009 Chardonnay Ma Douce blossoms on the glass with hints of tangerine, freshly cut flowers, mint, pistachio and apricot. The 2009 is texturally quite beautiful. A rich, creamy finish round things out nicely. This is the fresher and most vibrant of the Chardonnays. I very much like the energy here.

Focus on California’s North Coast (May 2011)

(15.2% alcohol): Sexy aromas of crystallized lemon peel, iodine and vanillin, coconutty oak. Lush, fat and seamless, with compelling sweetness but also a firming mineral edge to the apricot fruit. The iodiney quality recurs on the back end, giving the broad finish a distinctly savory quality. For all its impression of sweet fruit, this wine…
