The DBs: Bordeaux 2016 In Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Clos du Marquis was picked from September 30 to October 19. It has a generous, intense bouquet of blackberries, raspberry confit, cedar and light tobacco scents, representing a serious step up from the La Petite Marquise (as it should). The palate is rounded and quite sumptuous on the entry, and beautifully balanced, with…

Bordeaux 2010: All That Glitters… (May 2011)

(80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc; 21 h/h; 3.4 pH, 14.5% alcohol) Inky-purple. Intense aromas of violet, ripe citrus fruit, strawberry and cedar. Then fresh and bright in the mouth, with rich raspberry, dark plum and mineral flavors. The mounting tannins stay smooth on the long finish. One of the best Moulin Saint-Georges I remember…

The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

Bright dark red. Aromas of licorice, espresso and herbs, with a hint of blue fruits in the background. Nicely balanced but not especially rich or concentrated, with fresh dark berry flavors framed by harmonious acidity. Finishes with slightly dusty tannins and a hint of something green. Disappointing in the context of the vintage.

Burgundy With A Bit of Age: 2000-2014 (May 2019)

The 2011 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru just feels a little flat-footed. It has a typical leafy bouquet, nicely defined but bereft of some horsepower, damp moss/undergrowth scents becoming more conspicuous with aeration. The palate is quite sharp and tart on the entry. This is certainly fresh but I wish there was more substance towards…

2011 Red Burgundies (Mar 2014)

(100% vendange entier; 13.2% with a bit of chaptalization): Medium red. Highly complex nose combines wild dark berries, smoky herbs, brown spices, leather, rust and pepper. Suave, elegant and fine-grained; a lovely silky midweight with perfumed notes of iron, rust, olive, wild herbs, spices and pepper. Finishes with very good spicy length. This can be…

Squares & Circles: Bordeaux ‘10 At Ten (Apr 2020)

The 2010 du Tertre soars out of the glass with blackberry, sous-bois and light mint aromas. Good definition here and nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple but quite firm tannins, a welcome sprinkling of cracked black pepper and an off-dry finish that feels long and persistent. Superb. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year…
