The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Full red-ruby. Musky aromas of tart red berries, smoke and meat, with a light medicinal nuance. Suave on entry, then rather tightly wound, even a bit youthfully dry. Fairly rich wine, but the redcurrant, smoke and spice flavors are presently dominated by solid underlying structure. Finishes firmly tannic, with sneaky persistence.

Central Spain: Tempranillo and Beyond (Dec 2015)

Bright violet color. Explosively perfumed aromas of fresh boysenberry, floral oils and incense, with suave vanilla and woodsmoke nuances building in the glass. Sweet and plush on the palate, offering intense, smooth dark fruit liqueur and spicecake flavors. Really stains the palate, finishing with superb thrust and clarity; velvety tannins add gentle grip.

Margaux Focus 2: Château Palmer (Aug 2023)

The 1985 Palmer is another vintage that I have not met for a little while. This is clearly a step up from the 1982 on the nose, even if not a match for the 1983. This blossoms in the glass with brambly red fruit, thyme, rose petals and touches of Earl Grey tea. The palate…

Bordeaux 2014: The Southwold Tasting (Mar 2018)

The 2014 Capbern has a wonderful bouquet, very well-defined with blackberry, bilberry and cedar aromas; focused and vivacious. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine line of acidity, quite approachable in style with a caressing raspberry and crushed strawberry finish. This is very fine and let’s face it: a bloody good value. Tasted…

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

The 2014 Capbern is bold, ripe and quite juicy. Although not especially subtle, the 2014 possesses striking aromatic nuance, power and intensity. Dried cherry, licorice, herbs, tobacco and mint add attractive aromatic topnotes, but it is the wine’s juiciness that stands out most. This is a strong showing. The 2014 offers plenty of near- and…

In Excelsis: Château Latour 1887 – 2010 (Jul 2018)

The 1985 Latour comes from a rather “middling” period for the First Growth. It is a wine that I have tasted a dozen times or so and never come away impressed. The nose is fully mature with tertiary, smoky, leathery black fruit that does not exactly overwhelm with sophistication. The palate is medium-bodied, with lithe…
