Cleaning Out the Cupboard: Bordeaux 1943-2020 (Jan 2023)

The 2011 Marquis d’Alesme is a vintage that I have not tasted before. Like many wines in this vintage, it demands a lot of coaxing from the glass as it’s a bit conservative and unyielding, with earth and leathery aromas, missing some joie-de-vivre. The palate is medium-bodied with soft, fleshy tannins. Notes of leather mixed…

2012 Bordeaux: Messages in a Bottle (Jan 2016)

The 20120 Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases is floral, lifted and also understated. Crushed flowers, sweet tobacco, smoke, game, worn-in leather and rose petal are all laced into the soft, inviting finish. Dark red cherry, pomegranate, spice and mint add the final shades of nuance. The 2012 is a bit lacking in…

Champagne: The 2018 Summer Preview (Jul 2018)

The 2002 Clos d’Ambonnay is another spectacular Champagne from Krug. In fact, the 2002 may very well be the most sensual Clos d’Ambonnay yet. Opulent, intense and yet light on its feet, the 2002 has it all. Hints of ash, graphite and smoke wrap around a core of rich Pinot fruit in a powerful, riveting…

Here We Go Again: Value Bordeaux 2015 (Mar 2018)

The 2015 La Bridane offers lifted blackberry and raspberry aromas on the nose, cedar and pencil shaving following behind. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannin, good depth of fruit with graphite interwoven all the way through to the solid finish that needs a couple of years to loosen up. Good potential here.

Cleaning Out the Cupboard: Bordeaux 1943-2020 (Jan 2023)

The 2010 Labégorce has a backward nose that demands a lot of coaxing from the glass. A bit of boot polish infuses the black fruit, cedar and pencil box notes; a light marine influence comes through with time. The palate is soft on entry with moderate weight and is lightly spiced with a little dryness…

The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

Bright medium ruby. Aromas of blueberry, violet pastille, licorice, tobacco and camphor. High-pitched, pure and fresh, with the black fruit and violet notes carrying through in the mouth. Finishes firmly tannic but not hard. This has good balance for aging. (An earlier sample, which I rated 87 points, showed aromas of blackberry, bitter chocolate, mocha…
