1998, 1997 and 1996 Bordeaux (May 1999)

Deep ruby. Exotic, enticing aromas of black fruits, cherry cough syrup, roast coffee and caramel, along with pungent oakiness. Sweet, fat and thick in the mouth, but with adequate framing acidity. Quite ripe on the back end, with much finer tannins than the foregoing ’97s.

1998, 1997 and 1996 Bordeaux (May 1999)

Very dark ruby. Spicy aromas of cassis and vanilla. Firm and fairly intensely flavored, with cassis and leather notes. Showing its tannic side today.

1998, 1997 and 1996 Bordeaux (May 1999)

Deep saturated ruby. More exotic, superripe aromas of cassis, red cherry confiture and spice. Fuller and denser than the above, with good texture and sweetness. But also rather tannic, even astringent, on the finish.

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Reticent nose combines currant, nuts, and shoe polish. More tightly wrapped than the Armailhac, but also larger and more powerfully structured. Seems a bit more rustic than the ’96 Clerc-Milon. Finishes with very good length and tongue-coating tannins.

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Ruby-red, not quite as deep as the ’96. Exotic, sweet aromas of currant, lead pencil, spice and woodsmoke. A huge wine that conveys a sense of sheer power, but not quite as delineated or stylish as the ’96. This really explodes on the aftertaste, but the ’96 is more subtle.
