Champagne: The Last Frontier (Dec 2009)

The 2000 Brut Grand Vintage opens with boisterous, toasty bouquet. Initially a touch diffuse, the wine finds its balance and focus in the glass, showing good length and a polished finish. This is a tasty, accessible Champagne best enjoyed on the young side. The blend is 50% Chardonnay, 34% Pinot Noir and 16% Pinot Meunier….

2000, 1999 and 1998 Bordeaux (May 2001)

Medium red-ruby. Roasted plum, iron and smoke on the nose, along with a faint herbaceous aspect; distinctly more evolved than the ’00. Supple and sweet, with nice texture and balance but modest complexity. Still, this offers more give than the tougher ’98, and the tannins are nicely ripe.

1998 and 1997 Red Burgundies (Mar 2000)

Bright full red. Aromas of black cherry, bitter chocolate and mocha. Sappy and fresh, with nicely delineated, intense flavors of currant, cherry and bitter chocolate. Moderate density. Firm but ripe tannins show just a suggestion of dryness.

2001, 2000 and 1999 Bordeaux (May 2002)

Full medium ruby. Spicy aromas of raspberry, blackberry, coffee and Cuban tobacco, with roasted fruit and animal elements. Less sweet and dense than the subsequent vintages but offers a silky texture and complex flavors of dark berries and tobacco, as well as very good vinosity. The tannins, though, are less tender than those of the…

1999, 1998 and 1997 Bordeaux (May 2000)

Good ruby-red. Youthful but complex aromas of black cherry, iron, tar, game, espresso and chicory. Lush, deep and oaky, with good finesse and sound structure. Finishes with noteworthy length and substantial but ripe tannins.

Looking Backward/Looking Forward: 2000 vs 2001 Bordeaux (Sep 2021)

The 2001 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a vintage that I was surprised to discover I had not tasted for a decade. Showing light bricking on the rim, it has an open nose of brambly red berry fruit intermixed with cola, sage and tobacco, the relative higher proportion of Merlot rendering a different Grand…
