Montalcino: The Great 2015 Brunellos & More (Apr 2020)

Good deep, lively red. Expressive, complex nose offers blueberry, strawberry, cinnamon, sassafras, old rare leather and iron. Then similarly complex on the supple palate, but with good energy and focus for such an easygoing, broad wine. The notes of red fruit and sweet spices linger nicely on the savory finish.

2018 Burgundy: Confounded Expectations (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Village has a taut, crisp bouquet with scents of wet limestone, sea spray and green apple. There is fine delineation here, and more intensity than I was anticipating for a Village Cru. The palate is well balanced with subtle passion fruit and citrus notes on the entry, good weight in the mouth…

The 2019 Champagne Summer Preview (Jul 2019)

Roederer’s 2012 Brut Vintage will give readers a very good idea of what to expect in this vintage. Racy and voluptuous, with striking resonance, the 2012 is ample, creamy and wonderfully inviting. Baked apple, brioche, pastry, spice and light tropical notes all flesh out in a radiant Champagne that drinks well right out of the…

A Century of Bordeaux: The Twos (Sep 2022)

The 2012 La Lagune offers dark chocolate mixed with espresso on the nose, the winemaking coming through quite strongly here. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth veneer, though it lacks some depth and feels a little monotone on the finish. This does not feel as if it is going anywhere interesting. Tasted blind at…

Mother & Child: La Lagune 1962 – 2015 (Apr 2018)

The 2012 La Lagune has a perfumed, lifted bouquet that is much more dynamic and floral than the 2011: black cherries, raspberry preserve, crushed violet and a touch of iodine. There is a lot going on here! The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine thread of acidity, plenty of spice-tinged red fruit that…

2011 Bordeaux from the Bottle (Jul 2014)

Good bright ruby. Sexy oak spices, mint and menthol complicate bright redcurrant and dark plum on the nose. Round but fresh and lively too, with lovely vinosity giving shape and lift to the dark cherry, plum and sweet spice flavors. Offers a fleshy sweetness that’s unusual for the year. This lovely wine finishes with good…
