New Releases from the Tuscan Coast (Jan 2021)

The 2017 Redigaffi (100% Merlot) is a classic Tua Rita wine. Rich, dense and explosive, the 2017 captures all of the natural exuberance that comes so easily in this southern part of the Tuscan coast. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, spice, new leather and spice abound. Although the 2017 is quite potent, it is also not…

Central Tuscany: Maremma, Montepulciano and Beyond (Mar 2019)

The 2016 Redigaffi is another absolutely compelling wine in this range. Explosive and opulent, the 2016 manages to be both spectacularly rich and yet also retain tremendous freshness. Blueberry jam, lavender, crushed rocks and sweet oak all build as this sumptuous yet structured Merlot shows off its considerable personality. In 2016, Redigaffi is energetic, persistent…

On the Tuscan Coast: New Releases (Oct 2015)

The 2013 Redigaffi is one of the more understated versions of Redigaffi I can remember tasting. If opened young, the 2013 needs quite a bit of air, as it appears to still be recovering from its recent bottling. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, leather, licorice and spices build to an explosive finish supported by beams…

In a Tuscan State of Mind (Aug 2013)

Over time, the wine’s intense salinity emerges, adding energy, drive and polish. Hints of dark cherry, plum…

Tuscany Part 2: The Tuscan Coast, More Supertuscans et al (Sep 2012)

(100% merlot; 41 g/l dry extract): Deep black-ruby. Knockout nose combines cassis, blueberry jelly, licorice, coffee and sweet Oriental spices. Dense, suave and refined, with deep, multilayered flavors of cassis, black cherry, licorice, cocoa and tobacco. Finishes long and very smooth, with compelling sweetness and repeating notes of Oriental spices and black cherry. Long-time IWC…

Central Tuscany: Maremma, Montepulciano and Beyond (Mar 2019)

The 2016 Perlato del Bosco, 100% Sangiovese, is plump, juicy and forward, all qualities that are typical of Sangioveses from the southern part of Maremma, and the Suvereto in particular. Varietal red Sangiovese fruit is nicely amped up in this generous, inviting wine. A touch of new oak frames the finish nicely.
