Bordeaux 2013: Definitely Not the Vintage of the Century (May 2014)

(82% merlot and 18% cabernet franc): Bright ruby. Knockout aromas of dark cherry, raspberry and violet, complicated by graphite and coffee. Clean, fresh and very pure, offering dark berry and flinty flavors of above-average precision. Finishes with suave, rising tannins. The house signature of refinement and purity of fruit enables me to recognize this wine…

Purple Reign: La Conseillante 1966-2015 (May 2018)

The 2013 La Conseillante has a straightforward bouquet with no signs of greenness, just light tertiary black fruit that could benefit from more vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin, well judged acidity and a modest grip in the mouth. It is simple for this estate, perhaps lacking some fruité towards the finish although…

1998, 1997 and 1996 Bordeaux (May 1999)

Good ruby-red color. Distinctly cool minty, floral nose hints at cabernet franc leafiness. Good texture and decent sweetness, but the slightly medicinal bitter cherry flavor shows a strong greenness and a dry edge, giving an impression of modest ripeness. Solid acid and tannin structure. Slight finishing dryness. Lacks charm.

The 2019 Champagne Summer Preview (Jul 2019)

Apricot, candied orange peel, dried flowers, mint and pineapple are nicely delineated in the glass. Soft and silky on the palate, the 2005…

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Very good saturated ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of black cherry, chocolate and licorice; more crystallized than cooked fruit-as the heat in ’95 was not quite like that of 1990, according to Valette. Velvety and chocolatey in the mouth, with very sweet, port-like flavors verging on raisiny. Has the chewy extract to buffer its 13.9% alcohol….

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Saturated ruby-red, even darker than the ’96. Currant, raspberry, tobacco and cedary oak on the nose. Full and sweet in the middle palate, with strong, lively flavors. Here the toothcoating tannins seem slightly less well integrated today but they are ripe and even. Really creamy in the mouth, but with the structure to age.
